Better PPE has to work across multiple realities at once. It must meet medical performance requirements, remain comfortable enough for extended wear, be simple to adopt in clinical workflows, and fit within existing procurement and disposal systems. FILTRUM’s approach is to treat these requirements as one connected product system, not separate design problems.

From AusAir to FILTRUM
FILTRUM spun out from AusAir which was founded in 2017 following research into novel filtration technologies and collaboration with the University of Sydney. That foundation in advanced materials engineering continues to shape our approach to designing PPE with better performance characteristics and improved end-of-life outcomes.
Developed Through Government and Healthcare Collaboration
During COVID-19, the project worked with the NSW Ministry of Health, the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, HealthShare NSW, and other key stakeholders to address the growing waste burden from discarded PPE.
Recognised Australian Innovation
The work behind FILTRUM has been recognised through awards including The University of Sydney’s Annual Innovation Award, the Sydney Genesis Award, and the Medical and Scientific Good Design Award. The co-founders were also named in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia.
